Painting Sunflowers – (Apr 3, 2026)

Instructor: Teresa Oaxaca

Friday | April 3, 2026 | 10:00 am-5:00 pm (1-hr lunch break) | all levels (adults) | $190 | oil (acrylic, watercolor, pastel welcomed also) | Falls Church Arts Gallery

Join Teresa Oaxaca for an immersive day of painting sunflowers from life! In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to observe, interpret, and render sunflowers with confidence, structure, and expressive color.

We’ll focus on:
• Drawing and composition — arranging bold floral forms for maximum visual impact
• Color mixing and value relationships — capturing the warmth, light, and depth of yellow and earth tones
• Brushwork and paint handling — conveying texture in petals, stems, and seed heads
• Simplifying complex forms — turning large, radiant blooms into clear, paintable shapes

Fresh sunflowers will be provided so students can work directly from life. The class will begin with a live demonstration in which Teresa explains her process step-by-step, from block-in to finish, sharing how she observes form, light, and color decisions as the painting develops. Students will then paint with individualized guidance, feedback, and discussion throughout the day. Emphasis will be placed on strong observation, confident paint application, and developing a personal response to the subject.

Whether you are new to floral painting or looking to deepen your understanding of light, color, and natural form, this workshop will help you grow your skills and artistic confidence while working with one of painting’s most iconic flowers.
