Benedictine Monks invented modern beer in 1200 by adding hops, but the role of brewer only began shifting to men in the 16th century, with the rise of taverns, and eventually large breweries. The rise of craft beer in the 21st century has coincided with home brewing, even in places like Thailand, where the practice is illegal.
