Shaun van Steyn

Originally from England, Shaun grew up in the new state of Israel. His family were performing artists – mother, Doorn van Steyn an international ice skating star and step-father Sir Roger Moore. Shaun was handicapped with deafness for the first nine years of his life. At age twelve he was given a Brownie camera, which was the beginning of his journey to develop an inscrutable eye to capture in visual poetry the raw essence of life. After completing his studies at the Corcoran School of Art he became a successful professional photographer. His sixth sense blends a unique inner and outer vision. Known for his use of bright color and curious takes on what would otherwise be conventional subjects, he captures conceptual stories. Shaun has enjoyed his position as Outreach Director of Falls Church Arts from its infancy. “Photography is primarily an art-of-observation and adding a skill to record it. Finding something interesting in an ordinary setting, something that others may have overlooked. This can take myriad forms of beauty, humor, adversity or intrigue. Our eye senses when something is out of place. Many times it has little to do with what you see but everything to do with the way you see it. Individuals interpret vision in their own particular light as in our daily rush we miss the simple pleasures in life. We see and perceive light as a continual motion, a panorama of a movie. I capture those images. It’s wise to pause, smell the roses, and find order in chaos.”
